Proofreading & Editing

At DolmanScott, we believe every book should have the chance to shine without the distracting errors that other self-publishing services might allow to slip through the net. We ensure perfection, turning your manuscript into a masterpiece.

Proofreading

Our desire for the highest standards mean that we provide a proofreading service as standard alongside our printing services. We’ll go over your manuscript with a fine-tooth comb before we fire up the printing press. Our proofreading team will check the following is perfect and provide a report on our findings:

  • Spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • Formatting (e.g. page numbers)

Editing

Take your work to the next level and ensure your book is of the highest quality with our optional editing service. Good editing can make the difference to the success of a book; whether you need help eliminating pesky repetitions, advice on structure or style, or a keen eye to spot plot holes, we offer a service to suit your needs. By utilising our editing team’s expertise in quality control from start to finish, you guarantee perfection and cost-efficiency.

Allow a fresh pair of experienced eyes to finesse the details of your book. Our editing team will assess and advise on the following features:

  • Plot, continuity and character arcs
  • Style and structure

eBook Production

Our eBook conversion specialists will make sure that all the design, formatting, and validation is taken care of.

Along with alignment of paragraphs, quotes, images, and headings, we’ll make sure that the page layout has been properly thought through, especially when considering the mobile devices your ebook will be read on, whether Android or Apple smartphones, eReaders, iPads or any other portable device. This requires reformatting your manuscript as re-flowable text, ensuring your words flow to fit the reader’s available screen size.

If required, we’ll also build a Table of Content and anchor links within the pages to allow for a layer of interactivity.

Cover Design

A well-designed and visually intriguing cover will go a long way to boosting your sales.

If you don’t have an existing cover design, make an impression with a book cover designed by our talented team. Our knowledge of the stylistic conventions of different genres will allow your book to appeal to your desired audience, whilst you retain the control to create the cover you have always dreamed of. Allow our experience in selecting typefaces and imagery to complement your vision to make your book stand out from the crowd.

If you’re converting an existing physical book, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to simply use your original book cover design, as the dimensions won’t match what’s required. Our experienced designers will adapt your original book cover design to the right specifications.

Delivery & Distribution

Because various platforms, devices, and eBook distribution partners require different file formats, we produce a variety of file formats to distribute to our partners and customers, and we ensure that the file will be compatible with all modern digital devices, including iPads and Kindles.

At the end of the process, you have the choice of receiving the raw files for you to distribute as you wish, or take advantage of our VIP service where we manage the distribution of your book and charge less for conversion, in return for a royalty on each sale.

Preproduction

When creating a plan for production, we’ll concentrate on various aspects such as the characters (who they are, who they interact with and how they could be voiced), narrative structure (the tempo of passages, levels of emotion, and how the story transitions from page to page), checking pronunciations, and highlighting issues where the text doesn’t translate well into audio.

Voice Casting

When it comes to producing an effective audiobook, one of the most important choices you’ll make is who you get to read out those words of yours.

Whether you need a trustworthy and warm narrator for your non-fiction, or a cast of different voice actors for all the characters in your novel, we’ll dip into our vast database of talent to find the perfect voices that will bring your book to life.

We’ll provide a shortlist of voice actors along with their audition pieces using a sample of your manuscript so you can make a well-informed decision. We’ll then work with you to narrow down and hire your top picks for the job.

Recording & Mixing

Poor audio quality is truly unforgivable, and impossible to ignore. Your audiobook will be recorded in a professional audio recording studio with experienced engineers. We’ll sit in on the session to listen out for misreads and mispronounced words, extraneous noises or instances where the delivery isn’t quite right (mumbled words, wrong intonation etc).

An engineer will then take the session files and prepare your final deliverable, adding any additional sound effects or music as required. For the final master, we’ll use compression, limiters and noise reduction to achieve a finished audio book that is consistent in volume and quality throughout to make for a pleasant listening experience for your readers.

Cover Design

A well-designed and visually intriguing cover will go a long way to boosting your sales.

If you’re converting an existing physical book, It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to simply use your original book cover design, as the dimensions won’t match the required specification.

Our experienced designers will adapt your original book cover design to the right spec.

Delivery & Distribution

The master audio files will be made available to you for approval, ready for distribution through our audiobook partner, in line with their delivery guidelines. Your audiobook is normally made available by online retailers within 10-15 working days or less, ready to be found by a whole new audience who can enjoy them through this exciting and increasingly popular medium.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an eBook?

An eBook is simply a book published in a digital format. These books are downloaded by customers and read on their tablet, phone, desktop, laptop or eReader (for example, a Kindle). Although some may define an eBook as an “electronic version of a printed book”, there are many eBooks which have never been printed on paper.

Why should I bother getting my manuscript published as an eBook?

As our lives become more integrated with technology, the popularity of eBooks is only set to increase; since 2012, sales of eBooks have increased by over 70%. Publishing your book as an eBook comes with a plethora of benefits for both you and your readers:

  • eBooks can be sold via online retailers or “loaned” out by libraries.
  • eBooks can be accessed around the world by anyone who has an internet connection – the sky’s the limit!
  • eBooks are perfect for increasing the accessibility of your book. For example, text-to-speech software and font enlargement mean that the visually impaired will be able to enjoy your work quickly and easily.
  • eBooks do not require the costly processes of printing and shipping, so more of the sale price can go directly back to the author.
  • eBooks do not require storage space in the traditional sense; once published, your eBook will be permanently available and will never go out of stock!

Will eBook readers be able to see images from my book?

In most cases, yes! Images and cover art from eBooks are viewable on most devices.

How do I turn my book into an audio book?

Talk to us first as we can help you through the entire process.

Can you help with the recording and production of my audio book?
